About Mascara
Mascara is the capital of Mascara Province in northwestern Algeria, set on the southern slopes of the Beni Chougran Range about 60 km south of the Mediterranean coast and roughly 100 km by road southeast of Oran. Spread across two hills separated by the Wadi Toudman, the city overlooks the fertile Ghriss Plain and serves as the region's administrative, commercial and agricultural centre.
Founded in 1701 as a Turkish military garrison, Mascara is closely linked to modern Algerian history. Emir Abdelkader made the city his capital and resistance headquarters from 1832, and although French forces reduced it to ruins in 1835, that legacy is preserved at the former army command headquarters and tribunal, the Al-Moubayaâ Mosque and the Zaouia Sidi Mahieddine near El Guetna.
The city's layout combines a French-built district to the northeast with an older Muslim quarter to the northwest, overlooking orchards, vineyards and cultivated land on the Ghriss Plain. Central attractions include the Musée du Moudjahid, traditional markets and Mustapha Stambouli University, which gives the city a visible student presence.
Local culture draws on the western Algerian high plains. Chicken rechta, couscous with khlii, tagines and sweet breads such as mbesses and msemen are common, while seasonal waâda gatherings bring couscous, mint tea, fantasia and folk music to the region. Heritage sites such as the Dardara tree near Ghriss and the Smala of Sidi Kada extend the visitor route beyond the centre.
For travellers, Mascara is a compact base for the Emir Abdelkader heritage trail and the landscapes of northwestern Algeria. Leisure visitors come for history and local festivals, while business travel is linked to regional administration and trade in grains, olive oil, leather goods and the area's well-known wine production.
