About Jijel

Jijel is a Mediterranean port city in northeastern Algeria and the capital of Jijel Province, set between forested mountains and a coastline known as the Corniche Jijelienne. Its fine-sand beaches, mild climate and relaxed coastal atmosphere make it a popular summer destination for Algerian visitors.

Known in antiquity as Igilgili and later as Djidjelli, Jijel has a long maritime history stretching from Phoenician and Roman times through the Ottoman period and French colonial rule. In the centre, landmarks such as the Fisherman's Statue, the town hall and a replica of Baba Aroudj's 15th-century boat reflect the city's seafaring past, while Phoenician tombs near the beach recall its earliest settlements.

The surrounding coastline is the city's greatest draw. The scenic Corniche Jijelienne runs past coves, cliffs and beaches, leading to the Grottes Merveilleuses near Ziama Mansouriah, the Grand Phare lighthouse and Taza National Park, a UNESCO biosphere reserve where forested slopes meet the sea. Popular beaches such as Kotama and La Crique sit close to town, while El Aouana offers resorts and the Kissir animal park.

As the administrative and commercial centre of the province, Jijel supports a busy fishing port and regional industries including cork processing, leather tanning and steelmaking, with citrus and grain grown in the surrounding countryside. The port, wilaya offices and trade links give the city a practical role in regional business travel.

For visitors, Jijel combines a compact historic centre with easy access to one of Algeria's most attractive coastlines, making it a useful base for both leisure stays and work-related trips along the eastern Mediterranean shore.
