About In Salah
In Salah is a Saharan oasis town in southern Algeria and the capital of the In Salah Province. It sits deep in the central desert on the Trans-Sahara Highway, roughly halfway between El Menia to the north and Tamanrasset to the south, and serves as a traditional crossroads for journeys across the Sahara.
The town is known for its ancient ksar and red mud-brick architecture, set among dense date palm groves. For centuries, water has been drawn through an underground network of foggaras, a traditional irrigation system that has shaped local life and agriculture in this arid environment.
Visitors can explore the old ksar, including Ksar Badjouda, the busy central market, mosques, and shaded gardens. In Salah is also a base for excursions to the rock art, gueltas and desert landscapes of the Ahnet and Immidir regions, linking the town to the wider Saharan heritage of Algeria.
As a supply and stopover point on the trans-Saharan route, In Salah has long attracted traders, researchers and travelers. Today it also has links to nearby oil and gas activity and date production, giving the town a practical regional role alongside its historical character.
For travelers, In Salah offers a genuine desert-town experience rather than mass tourism, with extreme summer heat, distinctive architecture and access to remote Saharan landscapes that appeal to independent explorers and those interested in southern Algeria.
