About El Menia
El Menia, formerly known as El Goléa, is an oasis town in the central Algerian Sahara and the capital of El Menia Province. Surrounded by extensive date palm groves and sand dunes, it is often called the 'city of a hundred thousand palms' and serves as a quiet gateway to the deep desert.
The town's history is visible in its old ksar, a traditional fortified quarter, and in colonial-era heritage such as the Church of St. Joseph, where the French missionary and explorer Charles de Foucauld is buried. The national museum displays archaeological objects that reflect the region's long Saharan past.
Beyond the town, the Sand Rose Park offers golden dunes and unusual geological formations, while Lake Hassi El Gara attracts birdwatchers with its wetland biodiversity. Palm groves, desert tracks and seasonal Saharan tourism events make the surrounding landscape part of the destination itself.
El Menia sits on the Trans-Sahara Highway between Ghardaïa and the far south, giving it a role in regional logistics, agriculture and growing Saharan tourism. Date farming and solar energy are important local activities, and a planned rail link to Ghardaïa points to the area's evolving economic importance for both leisure and business travellers.

El Menia Travel Guide
