About Chlef
Chlef is the capital of Chlef Province in north-western Algeria, set in the fertile Chelif River valley roughly 200 km west of Algiers. The city has deep historical roots: it was known as Castellum Tingitanum in Roman times, later as Orléansville under French rule, then El Asnam, before taking its current name from the Chelif River.
That layered past remains visible in the Basilica of Saint Reparatus, an early Christian basilica containing one of the oldest known church labyrinths, and in the rebuilt centre that followed the destructive earthquakes of 1954 and 1980. Modern Chlef combines wide boulevards, administrative buildings, markets and residential neighbourhoods in a compact, workaday setting.
The surrounding province ranges from the Mediterranean coast around Ténès to the Dahra and Ouarsenis mountains and the irrigated Chelif plain, one of Algeria's main agricultural areas. Inside the city, the regional museum, public squares and lively central market offer a direct sense of local life and trade.
Chlef is also an administrative, commercial and educational hub, home to Hassiba Ben Bouali University and the ASO Chlef football club. Its position between Algiers and Oran, on the main east-west railway and highway, makes it a practical stop for business travellers and those crossing northern Algeria.
For leisure and business visitors alike, Chlef offers an authentic Algerian city experience with convenient access to the coast, mountains and farmland, along with useful road and rail links across the country's north.
