About Béchar
Béchar is the capital of Béchar Province in western Algeria and a long-standing gateway to the Sahara. Formerly known as Colomb-Béchar, the city grew around a French colonial military post and later coal mining, and it now serves as a practical base for exploring the Saoura valley.
Local landmarks include the traditional market with regional leatherwork and jewellery, surrounding palm groves, and the monumental Kenadsa longwave transmitter masts near town. The area's earthen ksour and desert landscapes reflect its Saharan setting close to the Moroccan border.
Béchar's compact centre combines colonial-era buildings with lively markets, while nearby Béchar Djedid and the oasis settlements show the region's mining and agricultural past. To the south, Taghit and Beni Abbès draw visitors with dunes, prehistoric rock engravings, old ksour and palm groves.
The city has a hot desert climate, with very hot summers and cool winters. It functions as a regional transport and administrative hub, connected by air through Boudghene Ben Ali Lotfi Airport and by road and rail links to northern Algeria.
For leisure travellers, Béchar offers access to Saharan landscapes and desert heritage, while business visitors use it as a hub for the wider western region. Its market culture, French colonial history and desert surroundings make it a distinctive starting point for exploring southwest Algeria.
