About Vlorë
Vlorë is a coastal city in southwestern Albania and the country's main gateway to the Albanian Riviera. Its wide bay, long seafront promenade and mix of Ottoman, Italian and modern architecture give the city a relaxed Mediterranean character with a strong sense of national history.
Vlorë holds a central place in Albanian history: the country's Declaration of Independence was proclaimed here on 28 November 1912. The Independence Monument in Flag Square, the 16th-century Muradie Mosque and the city's compact historic core reflect this heritage, while Kaninë Castle overlooks the bay from the hills above town.
The Lungomare, a palm-lined seafront promenade, runs south from the centre past beach clubs and restaurants. Nearby day trips include Zvërnec Monastery on its wooded island in the Narta Lagoon, the ancient ruins of Orikum and the protected Karaburun Peninsula and Sazan Island, which are popular for boat excursions and snorkelling.
Vlorë is one of Albania's larger port cities, with an economy built around shipping, tourism, services and olive and citrus farming. Its dining scene centres on fresh seafood, local olive oil, wine and raki, while seafront cafés and summer events keep the city lively in the evening.
For visitors, Vlorë works both as a beach holiday base and a starting point for exploring the Riviera, and its expanding hospitality and transport links, including Vlorë International Airport, have strengthened its role for leisure and business travellers alike.
