About Lezhë

Lezhë is a historic town in northern Albania and the seat of Lezhë County, set on a hill-and-river landscape between the Adriatic coast and the foothills of the Albanian Alps. It is best known for the League of Lezhë of 1444, when Albanian nobles gathered under Skanderbeg to unite against the Ottomans, making the town a key symbol of Albanian national history.

The town's landmarks cluster around its compact old centre. Lezhë Castle stands above the town with views over the Drin valley, while the Skanderbeg Memorial occupies the site of the Church of St. Nicholas, where Skanderbeg was buried in 1468. Remains from the Illyrian settlement of Lissus and later Roman and medieval layers give Lezhë a deep historical character.

About eight kilometres to the west, the coastal town of Shëngjin serves as Lezhë's seaside district, with beaches, hotels and restaurants along the Adriatic. Nearby, the Kune-Vain lagoon and wetland area forms a protected nature reserve known for birdlife, lagoons and quiet coastal scenery where the Drin River meets the sea.

Lezhë is also a centre of agriculture and trade in the surrounding Zadrima plain. The wider municipality is known for agrotourism dining, including the celebrated farm-to-table restaurant Mrizi i Zanave in nearby Fishtë, along with local seafood, eel dishes and traditional Albanian cooking.

For travellers, Lezhë offers an easy base between Tirana and Shkodër, combining a compact historic centre, coastal access at Shëngjin and countryside experiences. It suits short cultural stops, seaside breaks and business trips through northern Albania.
