About Guyana

Guyana is a distinctive South American destination where dense rainforest, powerful rivers and Caribbean-influenced culture shape everyday life. As the only English-speaking country on the South American mainland, it offers a different experience from many of its neighbours, with much of its appeal rooted in nature and a relaxed, multicultural coastal society.

Georgetown, the capital, is the country's main gateway and business centre, known for its wooden colonial buildings, St George's Cathedral, Bourda Market and the seawall along the Atlantic coast. Other important towns include Linden, a bauxite-mining centre on the Demerara River, the port town of New Amsterdam, and Lethem on the Brazilian border.

Beyond the coast, Guyana is defined by landscapes that range from the Amazon rainforest and the Iwokrama reserve to the Rupununi savannahs and the rivers of the Essequibo, Demerara and Berbice. Kaieteur Falls, one of the world's highest single-drop waterfalls, is among the country's most famous natural landmarks and a major draw for visitors.

Guyana's culture reflects its Indo-Guyanese, Afro-Guyanese, Amerindian and other communities, expressed through festivals such as Mashramani, Phagwah and Diwali, along with cricket and a rich tradition of Caribbean food and music. The country has also gained international attention through its expanding oil and gas sector, which is reshaping parts of its economy and business life.

Travel in Guyana is supported by Cheddi Jagan International Airport near Georgetown and smaller domestic airports, including Eugene F. Correia International Airport at Ogle, which serve flights to interior and regional destinations. Roads, ferries, domestic flights and river transport connect the capital with towns, business districts, hotels, event venues and tourist destinations, although journeys to remote areas can take longer.
