About Upper Demerara-Berbice
Linden is Guyana's second-largest town and the administrative capital of Upper Demerara-Berbice (Region 10). It sits on the Demerara River, about 107 kilometres south of Georgetown, and has long been shaped by bauxite mining and riverside industry.
The town was created in 1970 by merging the mining settlement of Mackenzie with the west-bank villages of Wismar and Christianburg. That industrial heritage remains visible in old bauxite works, disused pits, calcining kilns and landmarks such as the Christianburg Waterwheel, which dates to the early nineteenth century.
Across the Demerara River, the Mackenzie-Wismar Bridge links the town's two main sections. Neighbourhoods such as Retrieve, Amelia's Ward and Speightland add a local, residential character, while the Linden Museum of Socio-Cultural Heritage, the Bauxite Centenary Arch and churches such as St Aidan's Anglican Church record the town's social history.
Bauxite still anchors the local economy alongside forestry, agriculture, services and transport links into Guyana's interior. Linden Town Week, held each year around late April, brings together sports, culture and community events, and the town has a strong tradition in basketball and football.
For travellers, Linden works as a base for industrial history, riverside life and journeys toward the interior. Business visitors and leisure guests both find a compact, authentic Guyanese town with a distinct mining identity.
