About Burundi

Burundi is a compact landlocked country in East Africa, bordered by Rwanda, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with Lake Tanganyika along its western edge. Often described as the heart of Africa because of its shape and central position, it offers a distinctive mix of green highlands, lakeside life and living cultural traditions.

Gitega is the political capital and a centre for history and culture, with museums and important royal drum sites nearby. Bujumbura, the economic capital on the northeastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, is the country's main gateway, known for its lake beaches, markets, restaurants and proximity to the Rusizi River delta.

Beyond the cities, Burundi is defined by terraced hills, tea and coffee plantations, and protected areas such as Kibira National Park, a high-altitude rainforest in the northwest, and Rusizi National Park near Bujumbura. The southern town of Rutovu is associated with the southernmost source of the Nile, while the shores of Lake Tanganyika offer fishing villages, beaches and views across one of Africa's Great Lakes.

Burundi's cultural identity is closely tied to the former Kingdom of Burundi and its celebrated royal drummers, whose performances are recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Coffee and tea are important exports, and the country's position in the Great Lakes region gives it growing relevance within the East African Community.

Transport in Burundi centres on Bujumbura's Melchior Ndadaye International Airport and a network of roads linking the capital area, highland towns and rural regions. Public taxis and buses operate in and between cities, while private transfers, chauffeur services, charter buses and rental cars help travelers move between the airport, hotels, business districts, event venues and tourist destinations.
