About Bujumbura Melchior Ndadaye International Airport

Bujumbura Melchior Ndadaye International Airport is Burundi's main and only international airport, serving the capital and the surrounding region. It was renamed in 2019 in honour of Melchior Ndadaye, the country's first democratically elected president, and functions as the primary air gateway for visitors arriving in Burundi.

The airport opened in the 1950s and was among the first in the Great Lakes region. It has since been modernized in stages, and a phased renovation and expansion project is currently underway to upgrade the runway, aircraft movement areas, control tower and passenger terminal.

Located roughly 8 to 11 km northwest of central Bujumbura on the RN5, the airport sits near the northern shore of Lake Tanganyika. It is connected to the city mainly by taxis and pre-arranged private transfers, as there is no rail link or scheduled public shuttle.

A single terminal handles domestic and international operations, with regular connections to regional hubs such as Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Kigali, Entebbe and Dar es Salaam, plus direct Brussels Airlines flights to Brussels. Passenger facilities remain compact, so travellers are advised to allow extra time during ongoing terminal works.
