About Bujumbura Mairie
Bujumbura is the economic capital and largest city of Burundi, set on the northeastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. It served as the national capital until Gitega was named the political capital in 2019, and it remains the country's main commercial, port and transport hub.
Lake Tanganyika shapes much of city life, from the sandy beach areas and lakeside clubs to Rusizi National Park at the delta of the Rusizi River, where hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds can be seen. Inland, the city spreads over green hills and includes landmarks such as the Livingstone–Stanley Monument, the Independence Hero Mausoleum and the Musée Vivant, which recreates traditional Burundian life.
Neighbourhoods range from the business and embassy district of Rohero to the leafy hillside residential area of Kiriri, with busy markets in Bwiza and quieter residential streets in areas such as Nyakabiga and Kinindo. The central market is a lively place to experience local trade, food and crafts.
As Burundi's economic centre, Bujumbura handles much of the country's trade through its port and connects the region by air via Melchior Ndadaye International Airport. Coffee, tea and agricultural goods pass through the city, and it hosts banks, government offices, international organisations and a growing services sector.
For both leisure and business travellers, Bujumbura offers lake recreation, wildlife, cultural sites and practical connections across Burundi and the wider Great Lakes region, making it the country's main urban gateway.

Bujumbura Mairie Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from June to August offers sunny, mild weather and is the most comfortable time for sightseeing and lake activities. December and January also bring drier conditions, while the rainy seasons from March to May and September to November can make some roads difficult.
How to Get Around
Bujumbura is served by shared minibuses, motorcycle taxis and regular taxis, with private cars or rented vehicles with a driver being the most flexible option for visitors. Central areas around Rohero and the lakefront are walkable, while longer trips are easier by car.
Where to Stay
Rohero and Kiriri have the widest choice of hotels, business facilities and restaurants, while the Lake Tanganyika shoreline offers resorts and guesthouses with beach access. Quieter residential neighbourhoods such as Bwiza and Nyakabiga provide smaller guesthouses.
Food & Drink
Local cuisine features Lake Tanganyika fish such as mukeke, brochettes, beans, plantains and fresh tropical fruit. Restaurants, cafés and lakeside bars in Rohero and along the lakefront serve a mix of Burundian and international dishes, and the central market is good for fresh produce.
