About Ngozi
Ngozi is a town in northern Burundi and the capital of Ngozi Province, one of the country's larger urban centres. Founded in 1920 during the colonial era, it grew from a small administrative post into a busy regional hub, set at around 1,820 metres in the cool highlands of the Burundi hills.
The town's history is visible in its layout and landmarks. The red-brick Cathedral of Our Lady of Fatima dominates a central district, while the historic ficus tree known as Agasaka ka Inarunyonga stands in front of the provincial offices and is believed to date back to a 15th- or 16th-century king. Ngozi's original quarters such as Majengo and Berechi still shape the urban core.
Ngozi sits at the heart of a coffee-growing region, and trade in coffee and other agricultural goods is central to the local economy. The University of Ngozi, founded in 1999 as the country's first private university outside Bujumbura, adds an educational and civic dimension to daily life, with students and staff shaping the town's atmosphere.
For visitors, the lively central market offers fresh produce, fabric and local crafts, while motorcycle taxis and shared taxis make the compact centre easy to explore. To the west, the montane forest of Kibira National Park provides walking and birdwatching opportunities and a contrast to the town's busy streets.
Ngozi is relevant for both leisure and business travellers as a gateway to northern Burundi. It offers practical services, a calm base for exploring the surrounding hills and coffee country, and road links toward Kayanza, Muyinga, Kirundo and, farther afield, Bujumbura.
