About Aland Islands
Åland is an autonomous, Swedish-speaking region of Finland set in the Baltic Sea between Sweden and mainland Finland. Made up of thousands of islands and skerries, of which about 60 are inhabited, it offers a calm Nordic character shaped by seafaring, small coastal communities and open island landscapes.
The capital, Mariehamn, is Åland's only town and the natural starting point for most visits. Its maritime quarter and the historic sailing ship Pommern reflect a long shipping tradition, while Kastelholm Castle, the ruins of Bomarsund fortress and the Eckerö Post and Customs House tell the story of the islands' past under Swedish, Finnish and Russian rule.
Beyond Mariehamn, Åland unfolds as red-granite shores, pine forests, meadows, quiet harbours and island roads that are well suited to cycling and relaxed touring. Bridges and local ferries connect many islands, making it easy to reach smaller municipalities and remote archipelago villages.
Åland's economy and identity remain closely tied to shipping and the sea, while summer brings visitors for sailing, cycling, fishing, Midsummer celebrations and events such as Åland Maritime Days. As a demilitarised and autonomous region, it has a distinctive status within Finland and the European Union.
Mariehamn Airport offers regional connections, while regular ferry services link Åland with Sweden and mainland Finland. A compact road network, bridges, local ferries, taxis, private transfers, chauffeur services and rental cars make travel between the airport, ferry terminals, hotels, marinas and sights relatively straightforward.
