About Sund
Sund is a small rural municipality in the northeastern part of mainland Åland, Finland. It is best known for two of the archipelago's most important historic sites, Kastelholm Castle and the ruined Bomarsund Fortress, set among farmlands, forests and coastal inlets.
The area's history reaches back to the medieval period, when Kastelholm Castle became an administrative centre for the Swedish crown. Bomarsund, built later by Russia in the 1830s, was destroyed during the Crimean War in 1854 and remains a striking ruin today.
Visitors can explore Kastelholm Castle, the Jan Karlsgården open-air museum and the Bomarsund visitor centre and fortress area. Nearby Smakbyn offers local food experiences, while country roads and cycling routes connect the municipality's small villages and shoreline.
Sund is mainly a destination for history and nature rather than urban attractions. Its quiet villages, forested lanes and coastal views make it a relaxed stop on an Åland itinerary, while Mariehamn lies about 25 to 30 kilometres to the southwest.
For leisure travellers, Sund offers heritage, cycling and island scenery; for business visitors, it is a calm base near Mariehamn, where Åland's administration, port and airport are located.
