About Vårdö

Vårdö is a quiet archipelago municipality in the Åland Islands, an autonomous Swedish-speaking region of Finland. It lies just east of the main island and is reached by a short, free ferry crossing over Prästösund, making it one of the easiest parts of the Åland archipelago to explore.

The municipality has deep maritime and farming roots. Its best-known landmarks include the medieval Vårdö Church, the old St. Matthias Chapel and Åland's longest bridge, a roughly 300-metre span between Töftö and Vargata.

Local history is kept alive in several small museums, including the Åland School Museum in Strömsby, the Erkas and Seffers homestead museums, Lasse Eriksson's maritime museum and Wennström's country store. Strömma, the former home of writer Anni Blomqvist, celebrates the author of the Stormskärs Maja novels.

Villages such as Vårdö by, Töftö, Sandö, Simskäla, Lövö and Bergö are scattered across the islands. Sandösund is the local base for kayaking, with rentals and guided paddling trips, while cycling and fishing are popular ways to experience the coastal landscape.

For leisure travellers, Vårdö offers calm island nature, history and outdoor activities. Business and event travellers can use it as a base for small meetings and retreats, with ferry links continuing toward Kumlinge and Brändö in the northern archipelago.
