About Yakutat Airport
Yakutat Airport (YAK) is a state-owned public-use airport located about three miles southeast of the town of Yakutat on the Gulf of Alaska coast. It is the primary air link for Yakutat, a city and borough in Southeast Alaska that has no road connection to the rest of the state, making scheduled air service essential for residents, visitors, freight, and mail.
The airport originated from a World War II military airfield and later served as part of the former Yakutat Air Force Base before passing to the State of Alaska. Today it supports Alaska Airlines scheduled passenger flights as well as air taxis, floatplanes, and general aviation serving the community and nearby wilderness areas.
Yakutat Airport has two runways: Runway 11/29 and Runway 2/20. The compact passenger terminal is used mainly for domestic airline operations, with check-in, security screening, and baggage claim in a single small building.
Because Yakutat is remote and has no road access to the outside world, travelers typically continue into town by prearranged pickup, local taxi, or limited rental vehicle. The airport also serves as a gateway to the Hubbard Glacier, Russell Fjord, and the fishing and surfing areas along the northern Gulf Coast.
