About Wilmington International Airport
Wilmington International Airport is the main commercial airport serving Wilmington and southeastern North Carolina. Opened in 1927 as Bluethenthal Field, it has grown into a key gateway for domestic travel to the Cape Fear coast and supports general aviation alongside scheduled passenger services.
Located in northern Wilmington, the airport is only a few miles from the historic downtown district and provides easy access to popular beach destinations including Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach and Kure Beach. A single main terminal handles airline check-in, security and departures, while a separate international terminal processes U.S. Customs and Border Protection clearance for arriving international flights.
Ground transportation from the airport includes rental cars, taxis, ride-sharing services, limousines and local transit through WAVE Transit, making it simple to continue to downtown Wilmington, coastal resort areas and other regional destinations.
Recent terminal expansion completed in 2023 added gates, concourse space and passenger amenities, improving the travel experience at this compact and convenient regional gateway.
