About Willow Run Airport
Willow Run Airport is a general aviation, corporate and cargo airport serving Ypsilanti and the Ann Arbor–Detroit region of southeast Michigan. Located on the eastern edge of Ypsilanti, roughly between Ann Arbor and Detroit, it is managed by the Wayne County Airport Authority.
The airport has a notable history. It was established in 1941 when Henry Ford and Charles Lindbergh developed a large bomber facility on the site, producing B-24 Liberators during World War II. After the war the former bomber plant was converted for commercial use, and Willow Run served as Detroit's principal airport until scheduled passenger traffic shifted to Detroit Metropolitan Airport in the 1950s.
Today Willow Run focuses on cargo, corporate and general aviation rather than scheduled airline service. It operates two runways, a 24-hour FAA control tower and on-site U.S. Customs and immigration, with three fixed-base operators providing fuel, handling and passenger services.
For travelers arriving by private or business aircraft, the airport offers convenient road access to Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, Detroit and nearby university, corporate and manufacturing destinations, with rental cars, private transfers and chauffeur services available.
