Established in 1929 and county-owned since the 1940s, it supports private, business, flight training, and general aviation operations for Luzerne County and the surrounding region.
The airport is located about three miles north of downtown Wilkes-Barre in Forty Fort, with the city of Scranton roughly ten miles to the northeast. It operates two runways, an asphalt runway (7/25) and a mixed asphalt/turf runway (9/27), and has no air traffic control tower, so pilots coordinate arrivals and departures over the common traffic advisory frequency.
Valley Aviation serves as the airport's fixed-base operator, providing aviation fuel, hangars and tiedowns, aircraft maintenance, flight training, aircraft rental, and pilot services. The facility also includes a small administration building with restrooms.
