About Whiteman Air Force Base

Whiteman Air Force Base is a United States Air Force installation in central Missouri, best known as the home of the 509th Bomb Wing and the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber. It was activated on August 6, 1942, as Sedalia Glider Base and later became Sedalia Army Air Field, serving as a training site for glider pilots during World War II. In 1955, the installation was renamed Whiteman Air Force Base in honor of Second Lieutenant George Allison Whiteman, a Sedalia native and one of the first American airmen killed in World War II.

Located about two miles south of Knob Noster and roughly 70 miles east-southeast of Kansas City, the base supports military and government aviation for west-central Missouri. It operates as a controlled military airfield rather than a public airport, so transient and civilian aircraft must receive prior permission before landing.

Travel to and from the base relies mainly on road connections through the nearby towns of Knob Noster, Warrensburg, and Sedalia, with onward routes toward the Kansas City area. Private vehicles, taxis, rental cars, and pre-arranged transfers are the most practical options for continuing a journey.

The airfield has a single long runway capable of handling heavy military aircraft, supported by a control tower and continuous operations. Public passenger facilities are limited, and most traveler services such as fuel, lodging, and dining are available in the surrounding communities.
