About Whidbey Island Naval Air Station (Ault Field)

Naval Air Station Whidbey Island is a major United States Navy air station on Whidbey Island, Washington. The main airfield, Ault Field, lies about 3 miles north of Oak Harbor and supports electronic attack, maritime patrol, and search and rescue squadrons serving the Pacific Northwest.

The station was commissioned in September 1942 and named Ault Field in memory of Commander William B. Ault. Over the decades it has hosted patrol and electronic warfare aircraft, and today it is home to EA-18G Growler electronic attack squadrons, P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, and MH-60S search and rescue helicopters. The installation also includes a Seaplane Base section and Outlying Field Coupeville for carrier landing practice.

Ault Field is a controlled military airfield, so access is generally limited to military personnel, authorized visitors, and aircraft with prior permission. The air passenger terminal supports squadron deployments, training detachments, and transient military flights.

By road, the air station is connected to Oak Harbor, Coupeville, and State Route 20, with onward routes toward Deception Pass, Anacortes, and the Seattle area.
