About Wheeler Army Airfield
Wheeler Army Airfield is a U.S. Army aviation facility located near Wahiawa in central Oahu, Hawaii. It supports military aviation operations rather than scheduled commercial passenger traffic and forms part of U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii, adjacent to Schofield Barracks. Its IATA code is HHI.
The airfield traces its origins to 1922, when soldiers began clearing land for a landing strip, and it was named in honor of Major Sheldon H. Wheeler. It holds a place in Oahu's military aviation history, including the events of December 7, 1941.
Located roughly 22 miles (35 km) northwest of downtown Honolulu, the airfield sits inland between the Waianae and Koolau mountain ranges. Road connections link the area to Honolulu, the North Shore and central Oahu.
Because it is a restricted military facility, public travelers flying to Hawaii use Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu for commercial flights, then continue to Wahiawa, the North Shore and other Oahu destinations by road.
