About Whale Pass Seaplane Float Harbor Facility

Whale Pass Seaplane Float Harbor Facility, also known as North Whale Seaplane Base, is a public-use seaplane base serving the small community of Whale Pass on the northeast coast of Prince of Wales Island in Southeast Alaska. The facility operates as a water landing area and provides an important air link for a remote island community with limited road and ferry connections.

Located about one mile south-southeast of the community, the base supports domestic air taxi and general aviation flights. Scheduled seaplane service connects Whale Pass with Ketchikan, the main regional hub roughly 122 km (76 miles) to the southeast, and the base is also used by private and charter seaplanes serving nearby islands, lodges and remote coastal destinations.

Because Whale Pass sits near the end of the Prince of Wales Island road system, many travelers combine a seaplane arrival with a road journey from the ferry terminal at Hollis, which is about 89 miles away by road and linked to Ketchikan by the Inter-Island Ferry Authority. This mix of air, ferry and road travel is central to reaching Whale Pass and other island communities.

Facilities at the seaplane base are intentionally simple: the water landing area, float and dock infrastructure support small aircraft operations, while passenger services, fuel and amenities are limited. Travelers should confirm seaplane schedules and ground arrangements in advance, as this remote Southeast Alaska gateway has fewer services than larger regional airports.
