About Westover Metropolitan Airport / Westover Air Reserve Base
Westover Metropolitan Airport is a joint civil-military facility in Chicopee, Massachusetts, serving the Springfield area and western New England. Established in 1939 as Westover Field, it became the largest military air facility in the Northeast during World War II and was realigned in 1974 for shared civilian and military use. Today it supports the Air Force Reserve Command's 439th Airlift Wing alongside charter, corporate and general aviation operations.
The airport has two intersecting runways, including the longest runway in New England at 11,597 feet, and holds an FAA Part 139 certificate. Its civilian infrastructure includes a recently renovated passenger terminal with a TSA screening checkpoint, U.S. Customs availability, an aircrew lounge, fuel services and hangar storage.
Located about five miles northwest of Springfield, Westover is roughly two miles from the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) and six miles from Interstate 91. This places Boston, Providence, Hartford and New York within convenient reach, while attractions such as the Berkshires and the Basketball Hall of Fame are nearby.
