About Wemindji Airport
Wemindji Airport is a small remote airport serving the Cree community of Wemindji on the east coast of James Bay in northern Quebec. Owned by Transport Canada and maintained by the Cree Nation of Wemindji, it provides the community's main year-round air connection to the rest of Quebec and Ontario.
The airport was established as part of commitments under the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement. The agreement led to the construction of airports across northern Quebec, and Wemindji's passenger terminal was built in 1987 and renovated in 2015. Today the airport operates a single terminal building and a gravel runway, with Air Creebec as the main carrier.
Located about 8 km from the centre of Wemindji, the airport offers free parking and is open daily from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. There are no car rental agencies, taxi services or food outlets at the airport, so travelers are advised to arrange onward transport in advance.
The terminal includes accessible amenities such as wheelchair service, automatic doors and accessible washrooms, supporting a simple and practical travel experience for a remote community gateway.
