About Wallops Flight Facility Airport
Wallops Flight Facility Airport is NASA's research airport on Virginia's Eastern Shore, located on Wallops Island near the town of Chincoteague. The site traces its aviation history to a World War II naval air station and was developed as a NACA research station in 1945 before becoming part of NASA in 1958.
The airport operates three paved runways, an air traffic control tower and research hangars, supporting scientific aircraft, government flights and sounding rocket and balloon programs. The adjoining Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport also uses the facility for commercial orbital launches.
Situated along Route 175, about 10 km (6 mi) from Chincoteague and close to Assateague Island, the airport is reached primarily by private car, taxi, rental car or pre-arranged transfer. It is within convenient driving distance of Ocean City and Salisbury, Maryland.
Because the airport focuses on research and government operations rather than scheduled airline service, it does not have conventional passenger terminals, shops or lounges. The public NASA Visitor Center provides exhibits, a gift shop, vending machines and restrooms, making the site a useful stop for travelers exploring the Eastern Shore.
