About Wake Island Airfield

Wake Island Airfield is a remote U.S. military airfield on Wake Atoll in the central Pacific Ocean. It serves as a mid-Pacific refueling stop and emergency landing area for military aircraft rather than as a scheduled commercial passenger airport.

Wake Island became a transpacific aviation stop before World War II and was the site of the Battle of Wake Island in 1941. After the war, the airfield supported military airlift and civilian refueling flights through the 1950s and 1960s, and the current terminal building was completed in 1962.

The airfield has a single runway of approximately 9,800 feet and a small passenger terminal, with support facilities distributed across the island. Access is restricted to military, government, and authorized mission flights.

Wake Island lies between Hawaii and Guam, far from any mainland city, and has no public transportation network. Movement on the atoll is arranged through base operations, and visitors can only reach the island by authorized air transport.
