About Waimea-Kohala Airport
Waimea-Kohala Airport is a small state-owned public-use airport serving Waimea, also known as Kamuela, and the northern Big Island of Hawaii. Opened in 1953, it provides a convenient gateway for the Waimea district and the surrounding ranch and resort areas.
The airport is located about one mile, roughly 2 km, southwest of Waimea town and operates a single asphalt runway along with one small passenger terminal. Scheduled interisland service is provided by Mokulele Airlines to Kahului on Maui, while general aviation shares the same facility.
Because of its small size, ground transportation is limited. There is no public transit directly to the terminal and no on-site car rental, so most travelers arrange private transfers, taxis, or rental cars in advance. Kona International Airport is roughly a 30-minute drive away as a larger alternative for connections to the mainland and other islands.
Despite its limited terminal amenities, the airport offers an easy, low-traffic arrival experience for the north side of Hawaii Island, with Waimea's town center, the Kohala Coast resorts, and the Hamakua Coast all within driving distance.
