Virginia Highlands Airport is a public-use general aviation airport serving Abingdon, Washington County and the wider Southwest Virginia region. Begun as a small dirt strip in 1958 and developed through successive runway and terminal improvements, it now supports business jets, turboprops, private pilots, flight training and emergency aviation.
Located about 2 miles (3 km) west of downtown Abingdon just off Interstate 81 Exit 13, the airport operates a single general aviation terminal and a 5,500-foot asphalt runway. It serves corporate, charter, medevac and general aviation traffic rather than scheduled commercial airline flights.
The airport plays an important regional role beyond private flying. The Virginia State Police bases a Med-Flight helicopter unit at VJI, and forestry agencies stage aerial firefighting operations there during fire season. The field also supports air freight, charter traffic and daily business flights.
