Upolu Airport (UPP)

Upolu Airport (UPP) is a small state-operated general aviation airport on the northern tip of Hawaii Island, about three miles northwest of the town of Hawi in North Kohala. It covers roughly 84 acres and has a single runway, 7-25, measuring 3,800 by 75 feet, with no aviation services and no control tower.

The airfield has a long history in Hawaii aviation. In its early days it was known as Suiter Field, used by the U.S. Signal Corps for a communication station and later by Inter-Island Airways as an emergency stop and to serve the Kohala district after passenger service began in 1929. Territory and WPA funds helped maintain and extend the runway in the 1930s.

Today, Upolu Airport mainly serves private, charter, and general aviation flights for the North Kohala area rather than scheduled airline travel. Because there are no commercial passenger terminals, security screening, or on-site aviation services, visitors should confirm flight details and ground transportation directly with their operator.

The airport's location near Hawi puts it within reach of the rural North Kohala coast, and road connections continue south toward Waimea and Kailua-Kona or east toward Hilo. Its small scale makes it a convenient general aviation access point for the northern part of the Big Island.
