About Umiat Airport
Umiat Airport is a remote public-use airfield in the North Slope Borough of Alaska, serving the small camp community of Umiat on the Colville River. The area lies inside the Arctic Circle and is not connected by road or rail, making the airport the main year-round access point for workers, researchers and visitors traveling to this part of the North Slope.
Umiat has its roots in a 1944 U.S. Navy base established for oil exploration in Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 4, and the airfield itself was activated in 1949. Today the airport supports modern oil-field and logistics operations, functioning mainly as a fuel and staging stop for aircraft and helicopters working in the region.
The airport has a single gravel runway, 6/24, measuring about 5,583 by 100 feet, with no control tower, no published instrument approaches and no conventional passenger terminal. Air connections, including scheduled and charter flights, link Umiat with Fairbanks and other northern Alaska communities.
Because Umiat lies roughly 340 miles north-northwest of Fairbanks and about 140 miles southwest of Deadhorse, all travel must be planned around air transport or seasonal river access. Facilities are minimal, so travelers are advised to arrange transfers, accommodation and supplies before arriving.
