About Tyndall Air Force Base
Tyndall Air Force Base is a U.S. Air Force installation in Bay County, Florida, on the Gulf of Mexico about 12 miles east of Panama City. The airfield, which carries the IATA code PAM, is home to the 325th Fighter Wing and primarily supports military flying operations rather than commercial passenger service.
The installation opened in 1941 as Tyndall Field, a flexible gunnery school, and was named for World War I pilot 1st Lt Frank B. Tyndall. After the Air Force became a separate service, the field was renamed Tyndall Air Force Base in 1948. The base was heavily damaged by Hurricane Michael in 2018 and has since been undergoing a large-scale rebuild as the Air Force's 'Installation of the Future.'
Because the base is an active military installation, access is controlled and civilian travelers usually need prior authorization or a confirmed purpose for entry. The airfield is reached mainly by road, and visitors typically arrange private transfers, chauffeur services, or rental cars in advance to continue to Panama City, Panama City Beach, Mexico Beach, and other Florida Panhandle destinations.
