Twentynine Palms Airport is a public-use general aviation airport serving Twentynine Palms and the surrounding High Desert region of California. It is the closest airport to the entrance of Joshua Tree National Park, making it a practical arrival point for private pilots and visitors exploring the park and nearby desert communities.
The airport traces its history to World War II, when it was activated on January 1, 1942 by the United States Army Air Forces as a glider training base known as the Twenty-Nine Palms Air Academy. It later operated under United States Navy control before becoming a county-owned public airport.
Located about 6 miles east of downtown Twentynine Palms along Highway 62, the airport covers 480 acres at an elevation of 1,888 feet and operates two asphalt runways. It has no control tower and handles general aviation traffic rather than scheduled commercial airline flights.
The airport provides fuel, aircraft tiedowns, minor maintenance support and a small passenger lounge.
