About Tuscaloosa National Airport

Tuscaloosa National Airport is a public-use general aviation airport serving Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County, and the surrounding West Alabama region. Opened in April 1940 as Van de Graaff Field, it later operated as Tuscaloosa Regional Airport before receiving its current name in 2019. The airport began commercial airline service in 1949, and after scheduled passenger flights ended in 1997, it has focused on general aviation, private charters, and corporate travel.

Located about three miles northwest of downtown Tuscaloosa, the airport supports the University of Alabama, area businesses, and industries such as the Mercedes-Benz plant in Vance. It has two asphalt runways, including a main runway with an instrument landing system and approach lighting, allowing operations in reduced visibility.

The airport has a single terminal building and is served by fixed-base operators offering fueling, hangars, aircraft parking, flight training, aircraft rental, aerial tours, charters, and maintenance. It is especially active during University of Alabama football game weekends, when the terminal functions as a ground transportation center.

Road access connects the airport to downtown Tuscaloosa, the university campus, and nearby communities. Taxis, ride-hailing, rental cars, FBO shuttles, and private transfers are available for onward travel across the region.
