It functions primarily as a general aviation gateway for business, university and private aviation traffic, since scheduled commercial passenger flights are not currently operated.
Located about 4 nautical miles northwest of downtown Troy, the airport traces its origins to activation on 11 January 1942 as Troy Auxiliary Airfield, a satellite for Maxwell Field near Montgomery. After the war it was developed into the municipal airport, and a modern terminal and operations building was completed in 2009 within the full-service FBO facility.
The airport has two asphalt runways, 7/25 at 6,197 feet and 14/32 at 5,024 feet, along with a control tower, instrument approaches including ILS, and services such as fueling, hangars and tie-downs. Ground transportation to Troy is typically by private vehicle or taxi, with Montgomery Regional Airport about 51 miles north and Dothan Regional Airport farther southeast serving scheduled airline travel.
