About Totegegie Airport
Totegegie Airport is the only airport serving the Gambier Islands in French Polynesia and functions as a domestic gateway for the remote southeastern part of the territory. Scheduled services are operated by Air Tahiti, connecting the island group with Tahiti and onward points within French Polynesia.
Located on the small coral motu Totegegie, about 9 km northeast of Rikitea on Mangareva, the airport was built in 1967 and has a single paved runway and a compact passenger terminal. There is no road link to Mangareva, so arriving and departing passengers cross the lagoon by shuttle boat, typically taking around 30–40 minutes to reach Rikitea.
As a domestic-only airport, GMR has no customs or immigration facilities, and international travelers normally connect through Faa'a International Airport in Papeete. Facilities at the airport remain basic, with seating, restrooms and limited refreshment options rather than permanent shops or lounges.
Despite its small scale, the airport is a vital link for residents, tourism, cargo and services across the Gambier Islands, and travel planning should account for the limited flight schedule and the separate boat transfer.
