About Topeka Regional Airport
Topeka Regional Airport is the principal public airport serving Topeka, the capital city of Kansas, and the surrounding Shawnee County area. The airfield, long known as Forbes Field, has its roots as a military installation and was transferred to the City of Topeka and Shawnee County in 1976, when it became the region's main airport.
Located about seven miles south of downtown Topeka, the airport serves general aviation, corporate, charter and military traffic. Its current passenger terminal opened in 1985, and the facility was renamed Topeka Regional Airport and Business Center in 2012 while the airfield itself continues to be known as Forbes Field. Scheduled airline service ended in 2014, but the airport remains an active aviation gateway, including special flights for University of Kansas sports teams traveling to nearby Lawrence.
The airport has two concrete runways, including a 12,803-foot main runway, and is home to Kansas Air National Guard and Kansas Army National Guard units. Its central location makes it a practical access point for northeastern Kansas and destinations such as Lawrence and the Kansas City area.
Ground access is straightforward by road, with taxis, rental cars, private transfers and group transportation available from the terminal. Kansas City International Airport, a major hub, lies roughly 70 miles to the east, giving travelers additional connection options in the region.
