About Thorne Bay Seaplane Base

Thorne Bay Seaplane Base is a state-owned, public-use seaplane base serving the small community of Thorne Bay on Prince of Wales Island in Southeast Alaska. The facility, activated in 1970, operates from a water landing area on Thorne Bay and is managed by the City of Thorne Bay.

The seaplane base provides a practical gateway to Thorne Bay and the surrounding Tongass National Forest. Scheduled floatplane services connect the community with Ketchikan and other Prince of Wales Island communities, carrying passengers and mail, while the nearby Inter-Island Ferry terminal at Hollis links travelers to Ketchikan by road and ferry.

Located within Thorne Bay on the island's eastern shore, the base sits close to the town centre and connects to the island's paved Scenic Byways. These roads lead south to Hollis and Craig and north toward Klawock and other northern communities, making it straightforward to continue to accommodations, fishing destinations, and recreation areas.

Because it is a small seaplane facility, Thorne Bay Seaplane Base has no passenger terminal, control tower, or security screening area. Travelers use floatplane operator docks for check-in and boarding, and can reach the town's lodging, dining, and services within a few minutes of arrival.
