About Tenakee Seaplane Base

Tenakee Seaplane Base is the public-use seaplane gateway serving Tenakee Springs, a small community on Chichagof Island in Southeast Alaska. Because the town has no road connection, the base, together with the Alaska Marine Highway ferry, provides essential access for residents, visitors, freight and mail.

The facility is a state-owned seaplane base operated by the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities. It has a water landing area designated east–west measuring 10,000 by 7,000 feet, plus a small helipad. There is no control tower, fuel or aircraft repair service, and the float and dock sit directly at the edge of the community.

Scheduled flights are provided by Alaska Seaplanes, typically linking Tenakee Springs with Juneau and Angoon several times a day in summer and less frequently in winter. Juneau International Airport is about 40 nautical miles to the northeast, making it the main hub for onward regional and international connections.

Because the base is located within Tenakee Springs, arriving passengers can walk from the float into the village, which is known for its historic bathhouse, general store, café and bakery. The community itself is largely car-free, with movement by foot, bicycle or small all-terrain vehicles along a short main street.
