About Swansea Airport
Swansea Airport stands on the site of the former RAF Fairwood Common, which opened in 1941 and played an operational role in wartime air defence and training. After the war, the airfield gradually moved from military use into civilian aviation, becoming a local centre for flight training, private flying and community activity.
Today the airport is primarily a general aviation airfield serving Swansea and South West Wales. It supports private pilots, flight training, helicopter operations, skydiving and occasional experience flights, rather than scheduled commercial passenger services.
The airfield is located on the Gower Peninsula, about 6 miles (9.7 km) west of Swansea city centre, close to the Gower Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Mumbles. It is reached by road, with the 118 bus connecting the area to Swansea city centre and taxis or private transfers available for onward travel.
