Opened in 1957, it supports private aviation, business flights, flight training, and general aviation operations rather than scheduled commercial airline service.
The airport is located about 4 nautical miles (7 km) north of central Sumter, near road connections that link the city with Columbia to the west and Florence to the east. Its main paved runway is 5,501 feet (1,677 m) long, with a secondary turf runway, and the field operates without an air traffic control tower.
