The site's first landing took place in 1938, and the airport has been operational since the early 1940s, supporting private, business, and training flights.
The airport operates a 5,001-foot concrete runway (01/19) and a single passenger terminal and FBO building. A major renovation completed in 2002 brought a new terminal, expanded ramp space, upgraded runway and taxiway surfaces, and modern aviation weather reporting; the airport was named Texas Airport of the Year in 2003.
Located about 2 miles (3 km) northwest of the Sulphur Springs city centre, the airport sits within easy reach of Lake Sulphur Springs, Lake Fork, and other popular East Texas fishing and recreation areas. It is situated between Dallas and Texarkana along Interstate 30, providing convenient road connections to the wider region.
