About Steamboat Bay Seaplane Base
Steamboat Bay Seaplane Base is a small water aerodrome on the northern end of Prince of Wales Island in Southeast Alaska. Activated in 1962 and privately owned by Steamboat Bay Resort, it supports floatplane access to remote Steamboat Bay and the surrounding coastal waters.
The base operates a single water runway aligned north to south, roughly 6,000 feet long, with no control tower, no instrument procedures and no fuel services. Operations are VFR and unattended, and pilots rely on the Ketchikan Flight Service Station and nearby Klawock weather reporting.
The nearest town is Craig, about 20 miles away across the water; Ketchikan International Airport is about 67 nautical miles to the east. Travelers typically arrive by floatplane from Ketchikan, landing at Craig or directly in Steamboat Bay, with a short boat ride completing the journey to the resort.
Because road access does not reach Steamboat Bay, onward movement depends on floatplanes and boats. The base remains primarily a resort and fishing access point rather than a conventional passenger terminal, offering a simple, remote Southeast Alaska arrival experience.
