St Mary's Airport (KSM)

St Mary's Airport (KSM) is the primary air gateway for St Mary's, a Yup'ik community in western Alaska near the lower Yukon River. The airport provides scheduled passenger, mail, and cargo connections to the region and acts as an airfreight hub for roughly 16 Yukon–Kuskokwim communities within a 100-mile radius.

The facility was transferred from the Bureau of Land Management to the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities in 1978 and is publicly owned. It sits on a ridge about 4 miles west of the village, with a 6,008-foot gravel main runway and a shorter crosswind runway; scheduled passenger traffic is handled through a terminal space within the Ravn Alaska/RAVN Connect hangar rather than a large central terminal.

Road access from the village is short and straightforward, with transfer times of about 10 to 15 minutes under normal conditions. Because St Mary's is a remote community, onward travel is typically arranged by local pickup or pre-arranged private ground transport.

Passenger facilities are modest, with a small waiting area and vending machines and no restaurants, shops, or fueling services. The airport nonetheless plays an essential role as a lifeline connection for residents, medical travel, freight, and visitors reaching the lower Yukon region.
