Located about 12 miles (roughly 20 km) south of downtown Nashville, Smyrna Airport is a general aviation and military airport serving Smyrna, Rutherford County and the wider Middle Tennessee region. The site was originally constructed in 1942 as Smyrna Army Airfield and later operated as Sewart Air Force Base before being transferred to civilian operation in the early 1970s.
Today the airport covers more than 1,700 acres and is the third-largest airport in Tennessee, recognized as the state's busiest general aviation airport. It supports corporate, private, charter and National Guard aviation, with two asphalt runways, a control tower and fixed-base operators providing passenger services, fueling, hangar space and aircraft maintenance.
