About Smith Field
Smith Field is Fort Wayne's first municipal airport and one of America's oldest surviving aviation sites. Dedicated in June 1925 as Paul Baer Municipal Airport, it was later renamed Smith Field in honor of local aviation pioneer Art Smith and has served the area's general aviation community for a century.
Located about 5 miles north of downtown Fort Wayne and less than two miles from Interstate 69, the airport functions as the primary reliever airport for Fort Wayne International Airport and supports private, business and charter flying across Northeast Indiana.
The airport is home to Smith Field Aero Center, a fixed-base operator offering a passenger terminal and lounge, flight-planning services, Wi-Fi, restrooms, courtesy transportation, fueling, hangars and aircraft maintenance. Historic structures such as the 1930 main hangar and Hangar 2 reflect its long aviation heritage.
