It supports U.S. Army aviation for the XVIII Airborne Corps, the 82nd Airborne Division, and other units stationed at the installation, making it an important military airfield in the Sandhills region.
The airfield was established in August 1952 as Smith Lake Airfield and was constructed by the 406th Engineer Brigade. It was renamed in June 1955 in honor of Warrant Officer Herbert W. Simmons, and the 82nd Aviation Company was formed there in 1957.
Simmons AAF operates a single asphalt runway designated 10/28. It is a private-use military airfield with a control tower, and prior permission is required before landing, including for civilian aircraft.
Located about 10 miles (16 km) from downtown Fayetteville, the airfield is reached by road via local highways and lies close to Spring Lake and the surrounding Sandhills communities. It does not offer commercial passenger service, so civilian travel needs are typically handled through nearby Fayetteville Regional Airport.
