About Shindand Air Base
Shindand Air Base is a military airfield serving Shindand and the wider Herat Province in western Afghanistan. It is located in Shindand District, about 11 km northeast of the city of Shindand, and has long been important for military aviation and Afghan Air Force training.
Originally built by the Soviet Union in 1961, the base later changed hands and was used for Afghan and coalition air operations. Its infrastructure includes a single concrete runway, 18/36, measuring 2,417 metres, as well as a passenger terminal and limited ground handling facilities.
